These telescoping gauges come in a set of 6 that cover a range from 5/16 to 6".  They are used for measuring any bore, rod end, pin bore, lifter bore, etc.  All of them work the same way.  Simply loosen the knurled handle with a twist, insert the gauge into the bore slightly off center.  Tighten the handle and pull the gauge out over center.  The gauge has an internal spring that forces the gauge right down the center of virtually any bore.  They are super easy to read using a micrometer.
